It’s impossible to overstate the influence the Beatles had on us Baby Boomers. Well, I guess it IS possible, if you mention a certain Son of God ;-). But much more than their mere music affected us.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and within weeks of their arrival in New York, the hair of young men was allowed to grow longer than it had ever been before. And it wouldn’t be cut short again for a very long time, stints in the military excluded.

Prior to this, guys were still greasing up and making ducktails. Even if hair was allowed to grow a bit long, it was slicked back to stay above the ears.

Then, out of the distant east, four British lads stepped off a plane and the slick look vanished, seemingly overnight.

By the time I entered school in 1965, there were many sons of tolerant parents in my class with hair that crept over the tops of their ears. I was decidedly NOT among them. Dad insisted I come home from the corner barber shop (within walking distance) with one of two styles: a flattop, or a crewcut.

The flattop allowed me to have just a tad of hair left to comb, so it was my usual choice. By the way, a flattop would be completely impossible for me today ;-).

Intervals between haircuts for me were generally longer in the summer. My parents equated well-shorn hair as a school-related phenomenon. So when I walked into the barber shop around August of 1966, the time was right for me to spread my wings.

“What’ll it be today, Ronnie? Flattop, or crewcut?” asked Paul.

“Give me a Beatle” were my daring words.

Paul looked at me a little funny, as I recall, but granted my request. He cut a pretty decent Beatle for an old school guy. I went home proudly sporting my longer locks.

Dad hit the roof. He was livid that I would waste three dollars of his hard-earned money on a haircut that looked like it barely shortened my already-too-long hair. I was back in the shop getting my flattop within minutes.

I was in junior high in the 70’s before my hair finally started creeping over my ears. And that was as long as it ever got. Some of my schoolmates ended up with two-foot-long ponytails. Hair on the shoulders was a common 1970’s sight.

It wasn’t until the 80’s that guys finally started cutting their hair short again. The Beatle haircut began a trend that lasted twenty years.

That’s a lot longer than my one and only Beatle lasted.

Every day, you lose about 50 to 100 hairs. You’ve seen them. They swirl down the drain in the tub or get stuck on the back of your sweater. Or, worst of all, one might get in your mouth. Gross.
Normally, when hair falls out, new hairs start forming in the same place as the old ones. But when someone has hair loss, the hairs don’t grow back. Or they do grow, but there aren’t enough of them to take the place of what’s already fallen out. This often happens to men, who start to go bald as they get older.

The Hair-y Story

Every hair on your head is made of keratin (say: kair-uh-tin), the same protein that makes up your nails. Hairs grow from follicles (say: fah-lih-kulz), which are very tiny holes deep in your skin. Each follicle contains a hair root, the part of the hair that is alive and growing. The part of the hair you can see, the part above the skin, is dead. (That’s why it doesn’t hurt to get a haircut!)
This part is called the hair shaft, and it’s the part of your hair that can get long. Most kids’ hair grows about half an inch (2 centimeters) a month. About 85 out of 100 hairs on your head are growing (the anagen phase) at any time. When a hair is done growing it goes into its resting (telogen) phase and eventually falls out. Usually, 15 out of 100 hairs on your head are in the resting phase.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Men, especially older men, are the ones who are most likely to lose their hair. This kind of hair loss is called androgenetic (say: an-dro-jeh-neh-tik) alopecia, also known as male-pattern baldness. It’s the most common type of hair loss and it doesn’t affect kids. This type of baldness runs in families and happens when people get older.
So why do some kids lose their hair? A kid’s hair may fall out if he or she uses harsh chemicals to dye, bleach, straighten, or perm their hair. Even drying hair with very high heat can hurt it and cause it to fall out. Too-tight braids, ponytails, and barrettes can also make hair hit the road. Hair also can be lost if a person combs or brushes the hair too hard, especially when it’s wet.

What Will the Doctor Do?

If you think you’re having some hair loss, talk with your doctor. Your doctor might look at a few strands of your hair under a microscope. This will give the doctor a better look at what’s going on to help decide what to do next.
For a fungal infection (ringworm), the doctor will probably prescribe some medicine to treat it. Or if you are taking a medication that can cause hair loss, the doctor might stop it or prescribe something different. If the doctor thinks that an illness is causing the hair loss, you might need more tests.

Coping With Hair Loss

In some cases, it can take a while for hair to grow back on its own - especially if a kid has alopecia areata or is getting chemotherapy. Being bald can be upsetting and scary. Some kids wear wigs or hair extensions while they wait for their own hair to return. Others feel more comfortable just wearing a baseball cap, bandanna, or scarf.

It’s always tough to be different, especially in a way that’s easy for people to notice. Friends and classmates can make all the difference to someone who’s dealing with hair loss. They can tease the person and make him or her feel even worse. Or they can support the person, be kind, and remember that a person is more than just his or her hair.

Some kids have really gone the extra mile for a friend who had hair loss due to cancer treatment. How? They decided to shave their heads, too, so their friend wouldn’t be the only one. What a bald and beautiful thing to do!

Emo hairstyles do not require a professional stylist, and you are better off using your little brother’s kindergarten scissors or a pair of shears than scissors designed for cutting hair. Don’t worry about the hair being uneven; the more asymmetrical, the better. Many emo hairstyles feature a patch of triangular hair around the face or lopsided hair. To create emo haircuts, you do not need a lot of expensive hair equipment like curling irons or flat irons, but you will want to experiment with different gels and sprays. The best kind of gels make the hair actually stiff and spikey. If you are not satisfied with your haircut, you can always trim yourself using an ordinary pair of scissors. Although it is sometimes better to have someone else style your hair, because we cannot always get a good perspective on how our hair looks from the back. Don’ t worry if the cut is not even or straight, since emo hairstyles tend to be asymmetrical.

If your hair is long or medium length, create an uneven look by cutting one side shorter than the other, or putting part of your hair up and leaving the other half down. Use a special spray for super shine and add highlights if you have layers. Although shorter emo hairstyles are more common than long, you can still look one hundred percent emo and have long locks.
